I've just finished reading the first book of The Walking Dead, a comic about a post-apocalyptic zombie themed world.
The story is simple and typical: Somehow, zombies appear and (at least on the US from what I've read so far) seems to have destroyed the civilitation, leaving only groups of survivors scattered. The main character is a cop who, after being shot, awakes from a coma one month later and finds everybody is either dead or turned into a zombie.
Not much impressive about the argument (looks a lot like the 28 Days Later film), but as the author explains, it is like a "zombie film that never ends". Some situations are typical, others more deeply thought, and overall if you like zombie films (like I do), the comic is really nice and leaves you waiting for more (in my case, waiting for the re-stocking of the second volume).
The characters are well portaited and human psychology is well developed, having from psychopats to fearless, overprotective and other common schemes.
The series are not yet finished (4 books are available, each one covering 6 original comics, and the fifth "pack" is being released this year, first as another 6 separate comics and then probably as a fifth book).
As I said, is like a zombie movie, but longer.  The drawings are nice and the undead are frightening (even being at black & white). I want more zombies!!! :D
I've received today my shipment of Zombies!!! expansions!
First of all I want to express my gratitude to Twilight Creations for the fast delivery. I bought directly from them and they've sent the shipment in first class (from US to Spain that means almost 22$ I haven't been charged!), the package arrived perfectly and with a special card as a gift :)
I had chosen the following expansions:
There are more expansions but I decided to stick to this ones (I recommend checking BoardGameGeek for ANY boardgame you want info about).
I've also ordered a bag of 100 glowing zombies, that will arrive shortly in a separate shipment (as strange as it might look, the 100 zombies included in the base game can get short if game doesn't ends in about an hour!).
I know it is not a CRPG, but I'm addicted to Left 4 Dead.
Simple, fast, fantastic in cooperative play, and unlike it seems not short-lived. I'm enjoying it so much it reminds me the old times of "really simple but addictive" games. I just want to kill zombies all the time!
I thought it was a fresh idea (as fresh as a zombie themed game can be this days xD)... until I came with a boardgame, Zombies!!!
I've bought it this xmas (and some expansions are on their way) and played a lot with my girlfriend (yep! girls do play geek boardgames too ;)
Instead of writing a lot, I encourage you to read the rules (can be downloaded from the official site) and have a look at some photos I've taken of actual playing it:
The goal of the survivors, being the first to reach the helipad
The city layout is random and changes on each play
Event cards serve to either help you, or be bad with the other players
Reached the mall, just fight a zombie or two and get those bullets and lives
As the game progresses, the city gets usually infested with the horde
Miniatures are great (I've ordered 100 glow-in-the-night zombies :D )
Start to see similarities? Left 4 Dead has removed the event cards (and placed instead the AID, Artificial Intelligence Director), has added special zombies, coop play, fps elements, but overall looks a lot like a computer version of Zombies!!!
Even some terms as "reach the heliport", "horde" and some event card effects are used in both places with exactly the same purpose.
Anyway it was just a rant, each one is great in its field and I love both!
And as an extra, a small 4kb flash "implementation" of Left 4 Dead (thanks Javi!)
