September 2016 Status Update

This past months I've been publishing almost only comic and book reviews, but I am actually doing more things related with miniatures and RPGs. First of all, I've been playing videogames more frequently; Steam sales and offers plus some awaited releases made me spend most spare time either reading or playing. Now that I've finished some games, I'm slowing the pace as I want to do more things, but my currently installed games say a lot about what I'll focus on. As can be seen in the following picture, I bought from an offer the Warmachine Tactics videogame, I was curious and I always welcome turn-based strategy games... but I haven't yet tried it so can't say how good or bad it is.

Currently installed Steam videogames

I still have some games pending finishing, including some really long ones like Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2 and Grim Dawn, but no need to hurry. I'm focusing one or two non-GW games at a time only, and sometimes I throw into the mix an arcade or console game. Lately Games Workshop is doing a great job on PC regarding licenses, and I've deleted from my PC classics like Space Marine or Dawn of War II, both of which I've finished multiple times, to not overflow, but I really like having so many options to play digitally. I've also preordered the incoming Space Hulk: Deathwing and will do the same with Dawn of War III as soon as it is possible. Exciting times ahead!

Regarding miniatures, I've assembled every pending miniature I had and base primed a lot, but didn't painted much until recently. Now I am painting, mostly:

  • Imperial Knight: Only remains a few details and the base decoration (dead chaos space marine bits) and the decals
  • Rogue Trader era Space Marine: I found this miniature ordering an old box. While it is hard to highlight it with my crappy skils and the mini's lack of detail, I'm working on it
  • Nagash: A while after it came out, I bought the new awesome Nagash figure plus some undead warriors to decorate the base, but it was waiting (not even fully assembled) for me to decide to paint it. I started last week by priming it and right now I'm paiting the spirits, but my goal is to focus on fully painting it before starting with another mini. And without taking months to do it.

Rogue Trader Space Marine WIP

I might also retake painting Necrons, as they are quite easy and fast to do, but not until the lord of the undead is done. And about other miniatures than Games Workshop's, I finished painting two small lead witches as a small gift for my girlfriend, one green and one violet. Nothing impressive but was good for a change.

And that's mostly all, I keep reading but right now still going through a lot of pending comics before retaking Horus Heresy novels.

Magnetized Contemptor Dreadnought from Betrayal at Calth

The other day going for a walk I passed by my favourite local store and saw the Betrayal at Calth boxes. I do like Horus Heresy, but those MKIV helmets are not my favourite ones (I love MKIII and like a lot MKII, though), so when I read that they had a 15% discount on the game, had an idea: If I could find some Forge World MKIII heads at bitz websites, 31 models (plus the terminators and the dreadnought) would indeed be cheaper than the 5-man ForgeWorld squads, which at 24£ per squad + 15% total cost as shipping are way too expensive for delivering to Spain (and don't even come with weapons!). Betrayal at Calth on the other hand has lots of extra weapon options (I love the Rogue Trader-era missile launchers).

So, I decided to risk it and bought the game. And searched among some bitz sites I know for 31 heads. And ended purchasing around 25 MKIII helmets & 10 MKII ones (I couldn't resist having a few spare ones). And now I have a table full of 30-something minis half-assembled waiting to have enough spare time to finish the job.

But I've went a bit off the main topic, which was that when I checked the contemptor dreadnought sprue I thought I could magnetize its right arm to be able to switch the weapons (because both are full arms, not just the weapon piece). And I'm glad to report that it can easily be done and the results are nice, but I'll simply show some photos:

Now, time to go back and keep assembling those 30k marines, because afterwards for some time I plan to not buy any new model and focus istead at painting.

Imperial Knight almost done + future projects

After more than a year, it looks I might finally be able to finish my Imperial Knight. Right now is only missing some details, the base and transfers, so while has taken me a lot, at least there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Imperial Knight almost finished

Also, I don't usually post images of my custom conversions until I have started painting them because they might take a while... but to not leave this post too short I'm going to show two vehicles I plan to paint soon. They are binded to the other because I wanted to build a Ork looted Leman Russ tak, but just one with some changes wasnt't looking different enought, so after some brainstorming, I came up with the idea of doing like in the old times... using a Rhino for everything. After this devilish mix of the APC and the tank, here are the two creatures...

Ork Dakka Burna Tank

Leman Russ body, Space Marines Rhino sides and tracks, plus some spare tank weapons and "ork panels" that I had let (bought on the net somewhere a while ago).

It was only a bit hard to separate the Rhino tracks from the main body without breaking any of them, everything else went smoothly and the tank captain has a funny crazy pose.

Leman Russ Rhino conversion

Space Marines Rhino body, Leman Russ tracks. It is more simple, but I love how just "inverting the tracks" (using Leman Russ ones) creates the feel of a completely different tank, or in my case a different APC.

As the Rhino has the sides "joined" with the tracks I had to improvise, but some spare doors (from other Rhinos) worked fine as walls. I had to make the rear door a bit smaller on the sides but in general was a quick assembly.

So... this are two of my three vehicle projects that I plan to paint when I finish with the Knight. The third one is an idea that I had after watching an old movie... but I'll leave the details and photos for when I paint it (it will be the first one of the list).

Assassinorum: Execution Force

Assassinorum: Execution Force logo

People were asking for new boxed games, GW answered... although not exactly as we expected.

Assassinorum Execution Force is a very especifically themed game in which 1 to 4 players command a squad of four assassins that infiltrate a cultist base to kill a chaos sorcerer before it finishes a dark ritual.

The boardgame pieces are really good, both strong (really thick cardboard) and high quality (think latest Space Hulk pieces). There are no doors but some additional room tiles, event cards, markers and dice. Not impressive, and definetly not equal in quantity to Space Hulk, but still ahead regarding quality compared to for example Deadzone or Sedition Wars board pieces and tokens. Expensive or not, but GW's general high bar of control in boardgames is there.

The instructions are small but effective, although I haven't yet read them. The minis are 4 new plastic assassins, one of each specialty (Vindicare, Eversor, Culexus and Callidus), 15 chaos cultists, 3 chaos space marines and a chaos sorcerer with a small familiar demon (that acts as turn counter). One interesting bit is that as they are reusing existing plastic sprues for all foes, the chaos sorcerer is actually the full Chaos Lord double sprue, so you can make the Lord, the Sorcerer or a Terminator Lord. Only four new, but all are nice and good looking. Of course the new assassins are just incredible and very dynamic.

For those seeking the price/value ratio, some quick maths of the prices as of May 2015 of the individual miniatures:

3x Chaos SM: 8.30€

15x Chaos Cultists: 8.30€ x 3 = 24.90€

1x Chaos Sorcerer/Chaos Lord/Terminator Chaos Lord: 19.50€

4 Assassins: 21€? x 4 = 84€ (not yet released standalone)

Total: 52.70 + 84 = 136.70€ retail cost

At Games Workshop's website the game is 100€ but you can easily get it around 20% cheaper (at Wayland for example costs around 82€ at current exchange, with free shipping).

All this means that even without discounts, you will get at least around 36€ of miniatures "free". But truth be said, at the original price it is an expensive game: Most miniatures reused, limited variety of gameplay and scenarios, not too complex rules... Also for advanced Chaos Warhamer 40,000 players (people already with non-basic CSM armies) most minis won't add much value to their collection.

Discounted, for me is a good buy: Reviews say in general the game is fun and engaging (and not easy), for a collector (like me) just the assassins will cost more than 20€ each once sold separately in the future (I did wanted them), and as Dark Vengeance made me start a small Chaos Space Marines force, the minis of this game are a really nice addon to grow that army.

So... make your choice, but definetly hunt online, it does make a big difference and I got no problems finding my copy.
