Comic: Warhammer 40,000: Damnation Crusade

Chaos forces are digging something in a planet, and a force of the Black Templar Space Marines is sent to stop them; A new recruit is gathered in a planet to join the Black Templars; An ancient Dreadnought is awakened to participate in the neverending wars against Chaos.

These are the main story plots of Damnation Crusade, a 6 numbers comic book settled in the Warhammer 40.000 universe.

While not bad, the plots switch a lot, which combined with different artists for each issue of the comic means sometimes chaos identifying characters, until somebody calls them for their name and you reassociate them.

The story... is not deep, not long, nothing impressive nor too elaborated. It didn't engaged me much.

The drawings are fine, some quite detailed and cool, others just fine. Also varies with the artist.

Overall, recommended only if found cheap.

Comic: Deathlok: The Demolisher

Cover

I am quite impatient to collect ongoing comics; In fact, excepting The Walking Dead I only buy full packs, like this time I did with Deathlok: The Demolisher.

The future, where war is a TV show and countrys settle border and water supply problems by using mercenaries to fight for them in "the show".

A cyborg, built from the minds of two military heroes fallen in battle: One a good tactician, the other a TV star, killing machine but dumb. Full of weapons and with one mission: kill them all.

The rest of the plot, inside the comic ;)

A nice futuristic setting for an atypical hero. Combining sometimes satiric touches with strong language and gory killings, it won't ever get near Batman or Ironman but neither tries to.

I enjoyed this reading. If you liked Starship Troopers, or want to see something remotely similar to Ironman but with a different, more militaristic setting, read it.

Comic: Punisher Max: Kingpin

PunisherMax: Kingpin

PunisherMax: Kingpin tells the story of how Kingpin became the big mafia boss and Punisher's archenemy. And I warn you, it is not a sweet story.

Let's just say that the childhood was not too good, and the villain became so cruel and emotionless quite young.

As it is hard to talk about the comic without spoiling it, I can only say that its defect is that it is so small, I wish it had more pages and more details, because becomes a rush of flashbacks and situations.

Oh, and so well done you soon forget about Punisher as the main character. It is there but as another secondary element, another reason for kingping's birth.

Hard, brutal, sometimes disgusting... but shouldn't be other way. Recommended.

Comic: Nemesis

Nemesis

Another great recommendation and lending of my friend flipper83. I've just finished reading Nemesis, a comic from Mark Millar & Steve McNiven about a different super-villain.

Nemesis is a rich super-villian grown since a child not only as a criminal, but as athletic assasin and a genious tactical mastermind. It has no remorse, no feelings (except hate and desire of revenge) and from the first pages of the comic becomes clear that wants to kill law officers in ways as cruel and destructive as possible.

As I usually do I won't spoil the contents, but if you liked kick-ass and its uncommon heroes, you should give this comic a try, as it showcases a different criminal, full of money, gadgets and weapons, and that plans every move in advance.
In general appears to be a "bad Batman" (white inside of black, but hooded, with cape, with a motorbike scene so similar to Batman's, and sharing some similar gadgets), but loves to use guns and always has a gang as support.

The comic is gory, very gory. The action is full of blood and explicit deaths, and gets more interesting each page you read. Will Nemesis kill everybody? Will he get caught? Why he hates so much the law public images?

Short but very intense and with a nice plot. Another Millar jewel.

Comic: Crossed

Crossed cover

Crossed could be described as a disturbed version of The Walking Dead.

Imagine some kind of zombies that become cannibals when infected but retain a certain intelligence (but are completely mad).

Imagine scenes of raping (male and female), children dying in really gross ways, hard-language and terribly cruel situations.

Then you can start to picture how is Crossed.

It is good, but really not for everyone, I thought Walking Dead was hard but compared with this comic it is nothing. But if you're willing to, it is not badly narrated and contains some disturbing but imaginative "survival ideas".

The flashbacks are not perfectly placed and sometimes you need to read one or to pages to notice it switched back to the past again. The ending part was neither bad nor incredible but overall a recommended reading.
