Offtopic: My non-gaming miniatures

I must admit I'm sometimes like Peter Pan... I feel like a grown-up child, and while I've lost a great part of my childhood imagination (with which I could take a single Magic card and imagine stories for hours...), some things still prevail, like collecting some miniatures I find cool to decorate my book shelves.

As today I'm still "on vacations mode" and lazy to think of anything productive, I've uploaded some photos of my small collection and I will show them here (among with a few interesting extras not-related to the photos...):

An orc shaman guarding some articles and Warhammer 40.000k codex

Predator & Alien guarding some books...

An old T-800 Terminator toy, next to the Sandman comics collection

The executioner from Resident Evil 5. One of the latest additions, and the "worst and scarier one" in my girlfriend's oppinion xD

A zombie from Resident Evil 2

A Knight deflecting some arrows

Kratos defending some game programming books

Snake had to be in my collection

A Gears of War locust

Mister X, my favourite RE boss

And a Tyrant, from RE too

A wow Warlock...

... And a priest guarding some of my Forgotten Realms books

Another zombie, holding a brain

And the U.S.S. Enterprise in front of my complete Star Trek DVD collection (all seasons of all ST sagas + all movies)

Extra #1: Ruleset, FAQ, and lots of unit rules for Warhammer 40.000 Epic. Since the game itself is discontinued, they are a very valuable asset.

Extra #2: Mini codex for the Genestealer Cults (now updated for the 5th edition of Warhammer 40k). Since I have a few genestealers (most of them from Space Hulk, but counting the unpainted, enough for a small side-force or quick battle.

Extra #3: The Soundtrack of Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War II is freely available for download!

The Horus Heresy book

I'm almost finished reading The Horus Heresy: Collected Visions, a compilation of the four volumes containing the history of how the warmaster Horus betrayed the Emperor and the Space Marines, and the battles that took place in the heresy era.

When I was a child, this story were a mere few pages explaining that the warmaster made a pact with Chaos, and converted four chapters of space marines, with vage details of what happened, except that the Emperor defeated Horus but resulted heavily injuried in the battle.

This (big) book extends the history, explaining and telling how was the conversion to chaos, how he defiled the emperor and converted the four chapters to embrace the chaos forces, and even the status and inner battles of the Cult Mechanicum at Mars.

The first two volumes are a bit slow, repeating some tales and advancing slow in the events. Then, the action speeds up and gets a better pace.

The book is full of illustrations, some of them quite good, some decent, and a few ones really bad. The bad ones are mostly sketches that seem to be full-page just to fill more pages of a single image instead of written content, but overall I enjoy reading it.

One point against the pictures is the inconsistency of some of them. Those who, like me, have played Warhammer 40.000 since the 2nd edition, probably know that until then, the Space Marines used the MKVI armor, and had Rhinos and Land Raiders. In the second edition, MKVII armor is the standard, and few years later Games Workshop remade the Rhinos and Land Raiders to "MKII" models, similar but with visual differences.
Some of the artists seem to have focused just on the newer armors and vehicles, just drawing them with the chaotic chapter colors, or placing just one or two different details, which gives a "historical" inconsistency with the technology at that era.

Same happens with Terminator armour and Dreadnoughs: Some of the pictures represent really different and ancient-looking armors, while some appear to be too similar to the current venerable dreadnoughs and termies.

Apart from the inconsistencies, overall the book is good. It is not too expensive so if you like to get a deep understanding of the events that led to the current Chaos Space Marines I recommend this book.

Ork stompa assembled!!!

It came out, and one week after, I've finished assembling it.

The size of this machine is really big (taller than all my building ruins except one), and has so many pieces that at first is overwhelming. I highly recommend you to check first the GW step-by-step guide to see what every piece is for.

I haven't glued some of the pieces to properly paint it without problems of not being able to reach some zones, but there's a GW gallery of some painted (and modded) stompas that shows how fantastic this looks once finished.

Look at the comparison between a space marine Terminator and the stompa.
Any miniature looks tiny besides him

Rear-view. It is incredibly detailed everywhere...

Close view of the two gretchin mechanics arguing.

Close view of the head with the custom eyes I've added to the face (two ork landmines).

The rest of the assembled but unglued pieces.

The big metal skull of the front has been modded. Bigger eyes, and smaller teeth.

Look at the size of the weapons compared with a space marine Predator Tank!

Size comparison between Epic equivalent miniatures.

Having a stompa is not just a great and powerful adition for my ork army, it is too a childhood dream becoming true: Having a real ork stompa miniauture was my dream when I was collecting Epic miniatures and reading the White Dwarf magazines...

Been a bit off lately

Just a quick post explaining the lack of stuff here...

First of all, I've left (again) World of Warcraft. I still feel I don't have enough time to play it properly and, while the new expansion looks fantastic, playing it will be posponed to the future. I prefer playing non MMORPGs right now (and I have a lot of games to finish).

About Warhammer 40.000 miniatures, I haven't yet started to paint the armies, but I'm working on a scenery modelling that, if doesn't results too bad, I'll post some pictures (an ork mek facility, where the Stompa might have been built).
It's been a long time since I attempted some modelling, but being orks it is easier (and I have quite a few spare parts, plates and banners to place on it).

And finally, also regarding W40k but this time on the PC, my copy of Dawn of War II finally arrived, and I must say I'm impressed it is in fact two games in one!

  • The multiplayer battles are more like the tabletop game. Almost no base management, so you focus on battles with small squads. The number of units per squad is smaller than the real one (4 on space marine tactical squads, 3 on devastator ones, etcetera), but after a few CPU skirmishes I enjoy it a lot. Also the new army painter tool is fantastic (although we still don't get all units preview...)
  • The singleplayer campaign is in fact an RPG-RTS! You progress through the story obtaining squads (one of each), leveling units and your commander, and getting items (armours, weapons, accesories) much like in WoW. I feel like playing a space version of Warcraft III. Highly recommended!

I expect to make some posts soon but I first have to finish the single player campaign (not too difficult on Sargeant level but requires a lot of time and you can't save mid-game).
